Playing and Mixing

There are 2 main ways to play your music with DJ Mixer:

  1. Auto Mixing
  2. Interactive Mixing

Auto Mixing

In auto-mixing, you let DJ Mixer mix your playlist for you. To start an auto-mix playback session, just launch DJ Mixer and touch the Mixer button at the bottom of the screen. DJ Mixer will play all the tracks in your playlist, automatically fading tracks out before they are over and fading new tracks in as they start playing.

To turn off auto-mixing, touch the 'Auto Mix' button in the Mixer screen or in the Settings screen. When Auto Mix is off, DJ Mixer will loop tracks played in the mixer and will not start mixing-in new tracks.

Interactive Mixing

In interactive mixing, you simply use the mixer to play a mix of tracks from your playlist. You are responsible for loading tracks into channels, using the fader and keeping the mix live.

When you are done mixing interactively, just turn on auto-mix in the Mixer screen to have DJ Mixer continue the mix for you...

Using the Mixer

DJ Mixer main mixing interface is available in the Mixer screen. You access the Mixer screen by clicking on the Mixer button at the toolbar at the bottom of the app. You mix by touching and by touching and dragging the different controls in the Mixer screen.

Mixer Elements

Fader Slider

Controls the audible volume of Channel 1 and Channel 2 in the main mix. Touch and drag the fader position thumb left or right inside the slider to control the fader's position.

When the fader position is all the way to the left, Channel 1 audio plays in 100% of its volume and Channel 2 is audio muted. When the fader position is all the way to the right, Channel 2 audio plays in 100% of its volume and Channel 1 audio is muted.

When the fader position is in the center of the slider, both Channel 1 and Channel 2 are fully audible.

Auto Mix button

Turns Auto Mix off or on. When Auto Mix is on, a white check-mark will be displayed

Fade in Channel 1 Button

Click on this button to fade-in channel 1 and fade-out channel 2. When clicked, the mixer will start a smooth, gradual movement of the fader position thumb towards channel 1 (all the way to the left).

Tip: when clicked when the fade operation is already in progress, the fader thumb will jump all the way to the left, immediately muting the audio of channel 2.

Center fader Button

Click on this button to gradually move the fader position thumb to the center. Depending on the thumb's current position, this will cause the audio of both channels to become gradually audible.

Fade in Channel 2 button

Click on this button to fade-in channel 2 and fade-out channel 1. When clicked, the mixer will start a smooth, gradual movement of the fader position thumb towards channel 2 (all the way to the right).

Tip: when clicked when the fade operation is already in progress, the fader thumb will jump all the way to the right, immediately muting the audio of channel 1.

Channel Interface

Channel and track name label

Displays the channel name (Channel 1 or Channel 2) and the title and the artist of the track loaded into the channel.

Channel current playback time label

Displays the current playback time of the track loaded into the channel.

Channel playback time left label

Displays the time left before the track loaded into the channel ends

Playback position thumb

The thumb displays the current playback time. Touch and drag to the left or to the right to change the current playback time (scrub).

Track loudness image

Displays the track's loudness at different times. Tall yellow bars represent a loud section and short or no yellow bars represent a quiet section. Note that the graph is aligned with the playback position thumb above it, so the graph area just below the thumb pointed edge displays the loudness of the current playback time. You can use this graph to a find a good time to mix the track in or out of your mix.

Play / Pause button

When the pause icon is displayed, touching this button will pause the track and change the icon to a play icon. When the play icon is touched, the track will play from its current playback time. You will typically want to a pause a track that is not audible in your mix and play it just before you are ready to mix it in with the fader. Be careful not to pause a track that is audible in the mixer unless you really know what you are doing :-)

Rewind button

Rewinds the track loaded in the channel to its beginning. In other words, this moves the current playback thumb to time 00:00. If the track was playing, it will play from the begnning again. If the track was paused, it will remain paused after being rewinded.

Go back to 4 beats button

Touch down on this button to move the current playback thumb 4 beats (1 bar) back in the track's time. Keep touching down this button to keep moving 2 seconds back in the track's time. Stop touching the button to stop moving back. Use this button for advanced mixing techniques.

Fast forward 4 beats seconds

Touch down on this button to move the current playback thumb 4 beats (1 bar) forward in the track's time. Keep touching down this button to keep moving 2 seconds forward in the track's time. Stop touching the button to stop moving forward. Use this button for advanced mixing techniques.

Playback volume slider

Changes the channel's playback volume. You would typically want to keep the track at full volume and control the channel's volume using the fader. The playback volume slider gives you finer control over playback volume. The mixer adjusts channel volume relative to the channel volume. So, for example, if you set Channel 1 volume to 50% using this slider then sliding the fader all the way to the left will play the channel at 50% volume and fading to the right will lower the volume to 0% from 50%.

Copy to channel button

Copy the track in the channel to the other channel, causing the track already in the other channel to get unloaded from the channel. This button is labeled '2' when it appears in Channel 1 and will copy the track to Channel 2. This button is labeled '1' when it appears in Channel 2 and will copy the track to Channel 1. When a track is copied, its current playback position and playback states are copied as well. So, for example, if the track plays and the current playback position is 00:10 then after copying, the track will play from 00:10 in the other channel.

Use this button to perform double-up mixes and other mixing techniques. Make sure that the track in the other channel is not audible in your mix before copying over a track to that channel.

Load next track button

Load the next track in your playlist to the channel and unload the currently loaded track from the channel. Use this feature to load the next track to come into your mix. Be careful not to use this feature when the channel is audible in the mixer. Typically, you will want to laod a track into a channel when it is not audible and mix in this track using the fader.

Load prev track button

Load the previous track in your playlist to the channel and unload the currently loaded track from the channel.

Working with your Playlist

Your Playlist include all the tracks you've copied over from your computer to DJ Mixer. You can only play tracks in the mixer from your playlist.

Touch the 'Load to Channel 1' button to load a track in your playlist to Channel 1.

Touch the 'Load to Channel 2' button to load a track in your playlist to Channel 2.

Reordering Tracks

To change the order touch the Edit on the top right of the screen to enter the edit mode.

Once in edit mode, touch and drag a track from its order icon up or down.

To exit edit mode touch the 'Done button'

When you have a track in the playlist that you don't want to play anymore in DJ Mixer, you may delete it from your playlist.

To delete a track, enter the edit mode by touching the Edit button at the top of the screen. Touch the red delete circle next to a track row and touch the Delete button.

Note that you cannot undo this operation and if in the future you'd like to play a deleted track again then you'll need to download it again to your device from djmixer.fm.
